The Chinese government has been vigorously promoting compulsory education to ensure that every child has access to education. Since the Compulsory Education Law came into effect in 1986, unremitting efforts have been made to achieve the goal of implementing compulsory education nationwide. Today, in China, children begin primary school at the age of six and receive nine years of compulsory education from primary to junior secondary school. Starting from the autumn semester of 2008, students in the compulsory education stage no longer need to pay tuition fees. With the implementation of a series of educational reform measures, the quality of compulsory education in China has also significantly improved.
